Remembering Chinua Achebe on his birthday
Gambian Poet Tijan Sallah’s Reflection & Elegy
Editor-in-Chief’s Message
Regrettably, we interrupt our schedule for publishing this newsletter once monthly and respectfully ask you to indulge us as we pause to celebrate the life of the legendary Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, who would have been 92 years old today, Nov. 16, 2022.
Achebe died on March 21, 2013, in the U.S. and was buried in his birthplace of Ogidi in southeastern Nigeria.
In this special issue of The African Novel newsletter, Gambian-born poet Tijan Sallah reflects on Chinua Achebe’s legacy and offers a moving elegy to a towering world literary figure of the 20th century and into the 21st century. The elegy is published in Sallah’s new collection of poetry.
An important note: Sallah will be the featured guest on the December 2022 episode of The African Novel Podcast. Watch out for it in this newsletter and wherever you get your podcasts!
Enjoy!
Cyril Ibe, Ph.D
